Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteins, particularly their structures and functions (Anderson et al. 1998). The proteome is the expressed protein complement of a genome and proteomics is functional genomics at the protein level. Proteomics can be divided into expression proteomics, the study of global changes in protein expression, and cell-map proteomics, the systematic study of protein–protein interactions through the isolation of protein complexes (Blackstock and Weir, 1999).
